10 Years After
This has been a somewhat unique weekend & in many ways...
We rescued a Cocker Spaniel puppy from the roadside. She was miles away from any property skipping along the busy summer roads where unfortunately she may have met a messy end, so Stevie picked her up & brought her to the local watering hole where my Daughter adopted her, well better a puppy than becoming a grandparent I always say. She's around 3-months old, with no collar or chip yet still very well kept & familiar with human contact. Sadly this is an end of summer ritual we bear witness to as folks leave their consciences behind and return to from where they escaped. It's rather strange that we have Universal European Laws that address matters of such great significance as; the size & shape of a cucumber, yet there is no harmonised agreement regarding the treatment of animals, if they are man’s best friend, man ought to reciprocate the sentiment...
We celebrated the marriage of Klaus & Christina who had travelled to Ibiza for what I can only describe as "movie-tale" of a ceremony ... Reminiscent of an Owen Wilson film where he gets the girl & its all hoopla-hoops & strawberry daiquiris... The ceremony was based on the blessings of the Goddess Tanit & more to the point, the food was excellent as were the freshly squeezed mango & cava cocktails. This small gathering exemplified just how multi-cultural Europe has become, we were German, Argentinian, Mexican, Spanish, American, Swedish, English & Scottish ... I was very grateful to the bride, groom & their lovely families for extending their hospitality to me.
See now we can all get along !!! The problem is never the generosity of human spirit, it's the deceit by which it has been hijacked & abused…
It was most definitely a weekend to spend with family & friends, yesterday was indeed a very powerful date - September 11th 2011... Hugely significant in a historical context but overwhelmingly tragic for those directly effected by the events of 10-years ago. I watched the ceremony for flight 93 and the thing that really came home to me was just how ordinary American's getting on with life & love, bore the brunt of this unspeakable act of evil. When the defence of your land is compromised on such a level & with such devastating consequences, then "life as we knew it" will no longer be the case... The emotions, scarred into their expressions, without any words - said it all...
Truly fitting & stunning, simple & clean in its resolve & of an appropriate scale to mark the significance & enormity of such a tragedy. The 9/11 memorial water falls & ponds, 1-acre in size, in the footprint of the towers, a powerful statement so that we will never forget... There is something eternally soothing about the sound of running water, it's a noise that resonates a feeling of peacefulness & calm. And when you hear from the young children of those who were slain that day, some of whom never even knew their mom or dad, you have to be stuck by their courage & calmness in this moment, surely it is our responsibility to make the world a better place for them.
Moments of such tragical & historical proportion leave powerful landscapes across the fields of our memories... Leaving a Chelsea restaurant all 5 members of DD were heading towards a meeting with Management Consultant Miles Copeland. I remember walking past a pub, where the TV was showing the pictures of the first plane, at this point it was perceived to have been an accident. Mr Copeland's father, also named Miles is a very famous CIA agent, who's speciality was counter terrorism, Miles had grew up in the Near & Middle East & was somewhat of an expert in what was unfolding...
Of course it was virtually impossible to have a "band meeting" I think everybody in the room had the same internal feeling of, shit what happens next. Sensationally at the time, Miles explained to us exactly how this would pan out, how it would provoke us to attack & that is what they wanted, to drag us into a long, almost impossible to win type of war, against a virtually invisible enemy, with no real state to go after to fully resolve the problem. Later that day we returned to the studio in Brixton & the skies above London were silent & empty save some massive Chinook helicopters.
I drove out to Devon the following evening passing a list-less Heathrow Airport, "truth is stranger than fiction" and the moments evolving from such tragedy really puts matters in context, just how weird yet how real the whole situation was, not a plane in the sky, very low levels of road traffic... This was several days when the world stood still, the shock, emotion, anger & fear needed time to clear, the skies had to be declared safe, but as Miles had so eloquently explained what potentially lay ahead could be truly unprecedented.
The post-text to 9/11 has been anything other than peaceful, the response in large part simply wrong - Maybe it couldn't have been anything other than & of course when you "wake the sleeping giant" that is the USA's capability [by effectively shooting it from behind], then whatever side of the political divide you inhabit it would be naive to expect a passive response... But surely it should also be an instinctive priority to help mend the lives of those who have lived amidst this tragedy for a decade & the number, as we now know, is in the 10's of thousands in NYC alone.
Fix things at home first, when did that become of a secondary nature? What goddam use are you to others if you own backyard is piled up with stinking garbage whether it be a Congress that has abandoned local representation for the indulgence power... Or - What the UK is now coming to terms with - how the broken parts of society re-enacted "The Lord of The Flies" several weeks ago. Had they lost control of the street all together, which was perfectly feasible given the ineffectiveness of the police response, the outcome was potentially unprecedented. To me the lesson must be that - What lies beneath has been ignored for decades & now it's reared it ugly head, again.
The UK now has the largest problem of any Nation outside of Pakistan with extremists, I can't even pre-fix this with Muslim, I know many Muslin people and overwhelmingly they are extremely good, hard working families who have the same ideals & principles as me, and they will all tell you to a man, that living in the UK, even with its flawed political leaders, is so much better for them. That was - Until I saw the TV images of the Turkish Community in London out on the streets in mass, with bats & poles to defend their businesses & homes against the English Problem. The immigrants now defending foreign soil against the psychopathic destruction of its indigenous population, how mad is that
We never castigate or ridicule these sick English bastards but imagine if they had all been from one mosque, we would be peddling the "bloody foreigners" line & calling for all manner of outrageous solutions, when the actual problem is totally home-grown, thugs, terrorists, welfare dependancy these are our very own inventions, because "while the cats been away the rats multiply & play" The obsession with foreign policy over domestic policy has been truly reckless in the past decade… And as this cat has been up to all sorts of outrageous nonsense whilst away, its given rise to the rats cause, created a kind of fulcrum of justification for their evil, given extremism & fascism a new rallying point, disenfranchised a generation into all manner of radical behaviour, Student Riots, Dub-Step Gangsta, London Riots... Its all bloody extreme, the UK does not posses the resources to fulfil the ambitions of the all conquering Blair.
10-years ago the world changed, from the moment I saw the planes hitting the towers I knew things would never be the same, so what would they become, well sadly the politics has gotten even dirtier & if such a thing is possible "even more gridlocked"... There are several major conflicts that still are heading our way, on the face of it, the world is not a safer place however - Its probably always been that way, but with technology & the events of recent years it's simply opened up the can of worms to the public revealing a pungent quagmire termed as geo-politics, along with the routing of the global banking system, yes folks we are set-up to embark on a path of uncertainty & therefore fear, of course it feels like they got us by the balls.
But I hope we can get past this very lager hole in the road, & begin to repair all aspects of the damage & I pray for more folks to indulge it the facts, seek out the truth, what did they do with all of our goodwill, credibility & money? You don't have to become an activist to be well informed & well informed makes a constructive difference. You don't need a public service announcement to understand the wrongs of such tragedy & slaughter, but what we desperately need is truth & reconciliation, both at home & away... The psychology of living thru' such troubled & frightful times, now under a cloud of such financial uncertainty is not the climate one wants to take forward into the future, this is not paving a better future for our children, and they will probably be the first generation in many who will be poor in comparison to the wealth indulged in by their parents.
For the memory of all who lost their lives in the past 10-years, whether it be from heinous acts of murder or the gallantry of service, we owe it to them to make it back to the promised land from which we have strayed, the tone & temperature of the debate needs to be lowered, the bigotry of so called principles rejected, the ridiculous gladiatorial style of politics ridiculed, the media held to account, most switch of anyway these days... We can't spend anymore, can't afford to fight anymore, can barely pay the bills as nations so isn’t it time to step back from the brink & maybe instead of having idiot conferences with utterly useless politicians protecting their own class, [this post modern cabal of elite], surely now is the time to re-tool the focus of what is actually important to us & seek to instil a broader coalition of advice & democracy as the current system is failing us spectacularly.
Not just Politicians but also Academics, Religious Leaders [all faiths] Technologists, Philanthropists, Activists, Steven Bloody Hawkins etc etc If you wish to promote a better solution then its going to take a meeting of intelligent minds on a scale the earth has never witnessed, people need to find ways to rebuild their trust in the system, as it has been shattered on so many levels. I don't think Washington or London even begin to comprehend the scale of anger & frustration out there, or why do they act so unbelievably petulant at such critical moments.
And we need a much more proactive approach to cultural exchanges with countries such as, Iraq, Iran, Syria, Libya, Algeria, Afghanistan, Pakistan... I find it odd that we impose a vision or version of democracy on countries, yet we the people, the proprietors of the democracy play no real role in the dissemination of our principles, we tend to forget that politicians are merely the locally elected administrator of each constituency’s portion of National Power, the fact they have formed into a 2 party system to define this at a National level is nothing more than a political cartel - choose either this one or that one, & if you don’t like either then tough shit...
Until politics is fully engaged & responsive to the many & not the few, then I fear we will not make a great deal of progress, the question we should ask ourselves is, will we simply retire back to our TV's & Domino's and take whatever is thrown at us, or serve our interest better and not be so easily hoodwinked by those privileged with the power of our representation & future well being?
Then maybe - If everybody were to save just 1-proverbial puppy in life !!!
