This is my review of Paper Gods, and it's a long time in coming.
Let me preface this by saying that yes, I bought the album, and yes, I've listened to it several times to get a good idea of the songs.
1. Paper Gods- It's got a good beat to it. It also has an excellent message about how much we worship things, and don't see who has to suffer for it.
" "Hey, you're gonna want it all" the talking man declares,Go running to be first in line for what, nobody cares The next thing you must have,Find peace with matching bag, It's nothing to be glad about or sad when you forget about it. And while the race is on the rats will run the street, The slaver in a sweatshop putting trainers on your feet,And walking through the rain, oblivious to pain"
2. Last Night In The City- Too much Keisza, I don't buy DD songs to hear someone else sing what Simon should be singing. The throbbing pace is great for driving though. Normally I forward through this song.
3. You Kill Me With Silence- Very good song, ode to women who use the silent treatment with their loved ones. Just proves how clueless men can be when they piss a woman off. I mean, come on, do you REALLY want her to curse you out for how stupid you were? Take the silence, apologize profusely, and give her space.
4. Pressure Off- This is one of the worst songs on the album in my opinion, except Nile's influence. They should have had him work on Danceophobia. Even if you didn't know Nile was on this song, you'd recognize his style immediately. Very Chic-esque. I don't know what techno shit they are doing to Simon's voice, but I hope they make a remix with just HIM singing it (no Janelle whoever she is), and layer his vocals like they've done on so many other songs.
5. Face For Today- Seems like a filler song to me, like something that was either thrown together quickly. The layering of Simon's voice is what Pressure Off needed.
6. Danceophobia- This is my favorite song on the album. Great tempo, and ripe for remixing. I understand why they used Lindsay Lohan, but it doesn't make me like her just because she's talking about her own life experience. They could easily have had Nick make some techno female voice and get the same effect.
7. What Are The Chances- Nice ballad type song. Seems like a "I'm so glad I ended up with you" song. I prefer Simon's voice being pure in the majority of this song.
8. Sunset Garage- Another filler song. Nonsensical, very Simon though. Why does it feel like a few of these songs had good lyrics but weren't matched up to the right type of music?
9. Change The Skyline- Don't know who Jonas Bjerre is, and don't care. Another song with a good beat, but the lyrics are very weird. Is Simon saying something about looking into his field of view and seeing our world that needs to be changed by us as humanity?
10. Butterfly Girl- *yawn*..... another lost song. The message seems to be of a girl that was hurt, and how she needs to pull herself together so she can rise above it.
11. Only In Dreams- The more I've heard this song, the more I like it. It's almost a love song in it's lyrical content. I also like how the tempo changes in the beginning.
12. The Universe Alone- This hearkens back to the first DD album and almost Nightboat-ish. For that reason, I am drawn to it. The weird noises at the end seem pointless though.
"I'll see you in some other lifetime,On the other side of what we'll never know,Together we have walked a fine line, Now we go to face the universe alone"
13. Planet Roaring- Reading the lyrics, it seems like this should be worded differently. If this is a song of celebration, it doesn't convey it. Just another freaking weird song.
14. Valentine Stones- Weird title, weird lyrics. Let's leave it at that.
15. Northern Lights- I like this song a lot too, not as moody as Only In Dreams, but sounds like older Duran Duran songs in the 1st/Rio era.
So, overall, if I was grading the album, I'd give it a C. Get rid of pointless "featuring **" people and match some of the oddball music to other lyrics, and it would be great. A few of those songs just seemed like they were.... the only thing I can think of is.... forced.
