ADDENDUM: Making Patterns Rhyme: A tribute to Duran Duran on Manimal
October 15th, 2013
** Making Patterns Rhyme: Manimal Records¡¯ Duran Duran tribute album, slated for release on Feb. 25th, 2014, this week announced three amazing new additions to the line-up: French actress and avant garde performer Soko, who will be covering ¡°Girls on Film¡±; Brooklyn indie trio Crocodiles ¨C who have yet to announce which cover they would like to do; and Los Angeles goth/garage band Spirit Vine, who have signed on to cover ¡°Night Boat¡±. In other news on the project, sadly, Grimes will now not be able to contribute to the record due to scheduling issues. More artists and song titles will be added in January.**
From the LA based indie label that brought you Bat for Lashes, Warpaint and the 2010¡äs Bowie tribute (which featured Duran Duran¡¯s stellar cover of ¡°Boys Keep Swinging¡± along with Carla Bruni, Edward Sharpe, and others) comes the long promised Duran Duran tribute record, appropriately titled Making Patterns Rhyme. The LP is slated for a worldwide release on February 25th, 2014.
Manimal has strategically chosen cutting-edge indie artists to dig deep into the vaults of the Duran catalog, selecting album cuts and B-Sides rather than the worldwide smash hits that Duran Duran is known for. As label founder Paul Beahan articulated in his manifesto to those artists invited to participate in this project:
¡°Duran Duran started out as a gang of art-school kids who were in the thick of the UK post-punk scene. The only difference between Duran Duran and bands like The Cure or Wire is that Duran saw the artistic edge in disco as well as early British punk and art-rock and created a blend of their own mainstream-friendly choruses, dance beats and rhythms. Simon¡¯s lyrics in my opinion are right up there with such revered artists as Gang Of Four, The Fall and The Clash. Their incredible music was much overshadowed by massive early stardom. Duran to me will always be the post-punk band that introduced Americans to British new wave and made it a mainstream brand of music in the 1980s.¡±
We can look forward to a digital album that will feature many cover versions of the band¡¯s most thought provoking cuts. Manimal will also be releasing limited, random-split 7 inches in the UK and EU in February.
All proceeds from the release will go to Amnesty International.
