New Album Track - Choises
Choises was written in year 2000, only months before the DD reunion, it was only recently, when I started Jammin' with Greenie Green at Blast studios in Newcastle that I re-discovered the track, I basically threw this one into the pot, & lets see what's cookin'... If the drummer can get the groove down then a song like this works, and you need a certain swagger when you rock up a swing beat, & bingo - it worked, but truthfully, it wasn't on the track list until May this year.
I wanted to get a kind of late 70's New Wave sound on the bass, & there's just 1-guitar driving it thruout. The vocals were done through my new found friend The Braumer microphone, just tiny bit of limiter on the channel path. It's the sort of microphone that sounds like it's right deep down in your throat... Another discovery from my trip to Newcastle.
There was a a lot of stuff flowing through my mind when I returned up North, & I hadn't been back since my dad passed away - The last time I recorded there, at Impulse Studios, was the late 70's, which maybe explains why I was hearing late 70's bass sounds, but The Toon, as it is referred to, was the original destination of my childhood Inspiration, this is where it all started for me, not Birmingham, Newcastle... And I still wonder what happened to all the Singers & Players that were around at that time.
I'm an early riser these days 6-7am...So I took the opportunity to walk around the city one Sunday morning, its still the same so little has changed, of course things are bigger, but the hub of the town remains in tact save the loss of the Legendary Mayfair Ballroom. Every band on the planet played in Newcastle, not unlike Glasgow it housed the noisiest fuckin' audience around. Between 1973 & 1979 I saw virtually every legendary guitarist around, try doing that these days...
Sad you don't get to see, to feel the thrill of these bands the lightning flash of a guitar players speed, The magic of Freddie & the fatness of Queens Tom Toms, Angus on Bon Scotts shoulders doing walkabout at the Mayfair with his new radio pick up's... When Van Halen blew off Sabbath on their first visit to the UK. The Sensational Alex Harvey Band - Vambo Rool¡...Paul Fuckin Kossoff, Paul Rodgers, The Faces... Every version of Thin Lizzy¡... 10cc & Mott the Hoople with Ariel Bender... I used to live for this stuff, it was my entire life, & once you find your way there then there.s ain.t no turnin' back
There's not much tolerance of tossers up North, blagging is not something Geordies stand for, and the work ethic is very different from that of other Cities, if yer shit, they will let you know...So maybe it stirred a few primal instincts in me. Anyhow the sessions were incredibly successful, and what started as a tryout evolved into tracks such as "Choises".
